FIRST STEP TO UNDERSTANDING LIGHTING IN A PHOTO STUDIO: You have full control. Understand the goal, recognize possibilities, and respect the nuances of lighting through modifiers, contrast ratios, backgrounds, and subtlety. Then combine it with true photographic vision and the willingness to take chances to create something magical. Space, timelines, and budgets are the main challenges, overcome by creativity and on-the-fly brainstorming with a deep understanding of light, whether broad, narrow, reflective, octagon-shaped, or bounce filled. You should be a master of light in a controlled environment.
FIRST STEP TO UNDERSTANDING LIGHTING ON-LOCATION AND/OR OUTDOORS: Create some type of control. Understand the goal, recognize possibilities, and respect the nuances of controlling available light with various strobes systems. Then combine it with true photographic vision and the willingness to take chances to create something magical. Weather, location, budgets, and time of day are the main challenges, overcome by creativity and on-the-fly brainstorming with a deep understanding of exposure and the balance of artificial & ambient light. This is where you utilize all your photographic tools.
I love this stuff.
