DCAMA0810ESCRIPTION: Join us on a photo-packed fun four days in the amazing Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains.  During our time together, Sean and Ed will cover a myriad of topics dealing with digital exposure and visit a number of locations including Mono Lake, the Buttermilks, and the ancient bristlecones in the White Mountains.

Topics will include photo equipment, metering and exposure, HDR (High Dynamic Range imagery), macro, composition, lighting, adventure, landscapes, and nighttime photography.

Our workshop will start at 2pm on Thursday with introductions, a brief indoor lecture, and a sunset shoot in the field.  Each day will include two photo shoots in the field, critique sessions providing feedback for your images, and how-to presentations in one of the Westin’s audio-visual meeting rooms. This class is for digital shooters open to all levels of nature-lovin’ photographers.

DAILY SCHEDULE:

Thursday, October 9th: Meet at 2pm in our Westin meeting room for orientation, introductions, and a short lecture on photo gear and lenses.  Head out to Lundy Canyon to capture fall colors.

Friday, October 10th: Sunrise at Mono Lake – Lecture on exposure and composition in the outdoors – Critiques – Sunset

Saturday, October 11th: Optional sunrise shoot – Morning lecture on HDR and lighting – Afternoon Critiques – Sunset/Night Shoot in the White Mountains

Sunday, October 12th:  Morning lecture – Final Critiques – Workshop ends at 2pm, but once we pack up, and optional sunset Yosemite shoot may be in the schedule.

With two instructors, you’ll have the option to hike deeper into each location, or stay closer to the vehicle depending on your level of fitness and health.  Please note, depending on the weather and specific permits, subjects and locations may change.

CAIC0002_B&WWHAT TO BRING:Laptop (Sean and Ed will be teaching using Lightroom, Photoshop, and Nik Software’s HDR
Efex Pro 2 on Macs), DLSR or mirrorless camera with manual functions and tripod is a must, a few lenses, extra memory cards, and a carrying bag. Please bring a head lamp, comfortable hiking or walking shoes, a warm jacket, and layering for various weather conditions.

ABOUT SEAN: As a full-time commercial photographer for 23 years, Sean captures everything from adventure to wildlife, landscapes to people, travel to studio work and brings enthusiasm, 30 years of experience, powerful presentations, and high quality work to educate, entertain, and inspire.  During his career, his work has appeared around the world in numerous countries, publications, and with clients including Amazon, California Division of Tourism, Microsoft, National Geographic, The New York Times, Outside, Sunset, Timex, The Travel Channel, and Via.  Besides bringing a wealth of photographic knowledge and experience, Sean has a passion for turning what he sees in front of him into a powerful photograph that connects with others. His first book, The BetterPhoto Guide to Exposure, second book ThEd-2011_Tioga_261_e Complete Guide to Nature Photography, and various articles for Outdoor Photographer, Petersen’s Photographic, and Photoshop User magazine are testaments to Sean’s passion and knowledge of the subject.  He brings his unique perspective on each topic with a touch of real world scenarios, as well as a philosophical angle to tap into his thought process and your unique view of the natural world.  In over 15 years of teaching photography in the field and online, Sean has the knack for helping students rise to another level with their work.  You will come away inspired with extra tools to improve your skills and stretch your photographic imaginations.

ABOUT ED: Edward Caldwell has been working in the San Francisco Bay Area as a photographer for over 25 years. He specializes in photographing people for magazines, corporations, designers, architects, and ad agencies. The majority of his work is shot on location preferring the constant challenge of finding the right location and lighting for his subjects. In the past 12 years he has expanded to shooting architecture with a particular interest in working for architects specializing in sustainable architecture. You can find his work at edwardcaldwell.com.  The range of Ed’s clients include Arkin Tilt Architects, Charles Schwab, Credit Suisse, Four Seasons Hotel, Forbes, The Haas School of Business, Smithsonian, Stanford University, Time Warner, Travel and Leisure, The US Forest Service, and Wells Fargo Bank.  He currently teaches at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He has lectured at Brooks Institute of Photography, College of Marin, and Cal State East Bay. Ed is a member of ASMP and EP (a founding member).  Ed has been hiking, backpacking and skiing the Sierra Nevada Mountains since he was 15 years old. The landscapes of the Sierra are one of his favorite subjects. He also enjoys growing his own vegetables and roasting his own coffee.
